Claressa Shields meets and greets Flint families at AT Fitness Christmas giveaway
MT. MORRIS TWP, MI – Claressa Shields met and signed autographs for dozens of Flint-area children at her Christmas giveaway event Thursday afternoon.
The Flint boxing world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist held a giveaway event at AT Fitness, 2189 Coldwater Road, in Mt. Morris Township on Thursday, Dec. 23.
More than $4,000 worth of toys — including scooters, dolls, bicycles, sporting equipment, Nerf guns, train sets — were given away to local children.
Event organizers also passed out turkeys and winter clothing to residents while children got to sit on Santa’s lap and hear Christmas carols.
Co-owners Aaron Higginbottom and Anthony Richardson were thankful to have Shields come and give back to the community in a gym that she trains in.
“It is really a dream come true being from the community,” Higginbottom said. “Our whole thing is community empowerment – so this is a beautiful thing.
“We are touching the lives and touching the people who are need,” Higginbottom said. “It is a beautiful thing.”
Flint resident Natassia Thompson said her daughter will now get a bicycle for Christmas – something she might not have gotten without an event held like this.
“It means a lot – it is just so nice for the Black community to come together like this,” Thompson said, who attended the event with her children TyRaan Thompson and Tamariah Kimbrough. “… I am happy that we have a celebrity who actually thinks about where she comes from and remembers where she comes from.”
