A man was found fatally shot Christmas morning in his Hamptons home on eastern Long Island’s South Fork, officials said.
The grim discovery came after a 911 call about a burglary inside the house on Roses Grove Road in Southampton about 8:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. The homeowner, Steven Byrnes, 53, was declared dead at the scene by the office of the Suffolk County medical examiner.
It appears Byrne was the intended target of the violence and not the victim of a home invasion, officials told The Southhampton Press.
“The investigation thus far has demonstrated that the actions here were not random, this was a targeted event,” Southampton Town Police Chief Steven Skrynecki told the news outlet.
“We have been getting calls from concerned community members about the fear of lingering danger, and that is understandable. But at this time we think this was targeted.”
There were no immediate arrests as the investigation continued, police said.
