Lafayette Parish has seen retail sales explode over the course of 2021, and the parish will undoubtedly set a new standard for sales by the end of the year — thanks in large part to increased sales in the parish’s smaller municipalities.
Data from the Lafayette Economic Development Authority shows that the parish has recorded around $6.3 billion through October — just $134.9 million or 2.1% shy of the full year total of 2020, which was a record.
The City of Lafayette makes up the bulk of the parish’s sales, which is about par for the course in any given year. But the other cities in the parish have performed better than normal.

The City of Lafayette has accounted for 67.8% of the sales so far in 2021, which is the lowest since at least 1999. The city’s share of the parish’s sales has fallen every year since 2016, LEDA data shows.
At its high point in 2002, the City of Lafayette made up 76.2% of the parish’s sales. The city hasn’t been above 70% since 2018.
Through the first 10 months of 2021, Broussard makes up 8.5%, which is the same as 2020. At its high point in 2012, Broussard made up 11% of the parish’s sales. On the year, Broussard’s sales total $535.3 million, just 3% shy of 2020’s full-year total.
Carencro makes up 5.4% of the parish’s sales in 2021, and the city’s share of the parish’s sales have increased every year since 2010, when it only made up 2% of sales. On the year, its sales total $341.4 million, which is already 9.9% higher than the full-year 2020 total.

The City of Scott makes up 4% of the parish’s total sales, which is down slightly from 4.1% in 2020. On the year, the city has $254.7 million in sales, down only 4.4% from the full 2020 total.
Youngsville is making up 5.3% of the parish’s sales in 2021, the highest mark since at least 1999. Youngsville’s share of sales has risen steadily since 2013. The city’s sales total $330.7 million this year, only 0.2% shy of 2020’s total.
Duson is making up 0.6% of the parish’s sales, which is on par with the town’s mark the past few years. Duson’s sales total $36.3 million, which is about 1% higher than the full 2020 total.
The unincorporated parts of Lafayette Parish have made up 8.4% of the parish’s total sales. The unincorporated parish has had $527.5 million in sales this year, down around 2.3% from the 2020 total.
