Reporter Jojo Santo Tomas has long served as the chief taste master for the Lifestyle and other sections, but this year we opened the kitchen doors to chefs and cooks on island as well as beyond our shores.
We’ve been thrilled to partner with some of the most popular online sources of local recipes, including the Facebook group 671 Guam Recipes.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the group is led by founder, Cel Montague. She calls the project “Irensia Para I Famagu’on Ta’ ~ Our Heritage: Passing it Forward for Our Children.”
“It’s archiving, collecting and documenting the recipes submitted and preserving those recipes for future generations,” she said in a previous interview.
Paula Lujan Quinene of Guam Mama Cooks fame, meanwhile, share historical and cultural anthropology details in her monthly column for us.
“The great thing about food on Guam is that it’s not just what was indigenously there but what the settlers brought, the Spaniards, the Filipinos and the Chinese,” Quinene said in a prior interview. “We can use the foods from different cultures, and that’s what we see on the fiesta tables.”
We were lucky to catch Quinene when she was on island in the summer for our PDN special event, a Dinanche Tasteoff
Well, we have our answer, thanks to four taste testers who participated in our Dinanche Taste-off on July 28 at Proa Restaurant in Tumon.
Proa Executive Chef Geoffrey Perez graciously provided plates of red rice and hibachi style chicken and short ribs for the event, and lent his taste buds to the cause. Aside from Quinene and Perez, the other judges were Raul Cordero, Proa’s executive pastry chef and Shanice Poe, an on-air personality at Hit Radio 100.
We didn’t have a clear winner declared, as the different brands represented would appeal to various taste buds, but it sure was fun. We hope to host more fun events like this in the coming year!
