The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is looking for community members, who enjoy meeting visitors from all over the world, and who want to share their knowledge of the harbor, to be volunteer docents.
Those who are interested and have at least three hours a week to volunteer can join the Maritime Museum's next 10-week docent training program, Saturday, Jan. 8-March 12.
Docents in training will learn about the native Chumash people, commercial diving and fishing milestones, the Santa Barbara Channel’s military history, and Santa Barbara as the birthplace of the environmental movement.
Keep up with Noozhawk’s daily COVID-19 coverage, delivered at 4:15 a.m. right to your inbox.
The volunteer team supports the SBMM mission to create quality exhibits and educational experiences that celebrate the Santa Barbara Channel and illuminate the area's rich connections with the sea.
Docents help SBMM cultivate insightful discussions about the past and future of the coastal community. They maintain and explain exhibits, and assist with special events, exhibit openings, art receptions, and community festivals.
“Docents also enjoy the social environment of the museum, make new friends, and gain a feeling of fulfillment,” said Jesse Baker-Lorelli, volunteer coordinator.
For more about how to volunteer and become a docent, contact Baker-Lorelli at [email protected] or 805-456-8748. To apply, complete a volunteer application at www.sbmm.org/volunteer-application.
SBMM is at the Santa Barbara Harbor, 113 Harbor Way, Ste. 190. Visit sbmm.org or call 805-962-8404 for details.

Welcome to Noozhawk Asks, a new feature in which you ask the questions, you help decide what Noozhawk investigates, and you work with us to find the answers.
Here’s how it works: You share your questions with us in the nearby box. In some cases, we may work with you to find the answers. In others, we may ask you to vote on your top choices to help us narrow the scope. And we’ll be regularly asking you for your feedback on a specific issue or topic.
We also expect to work together with the reader who asked the winning questions to find the answer together. Noozhawk’s objective is to come at questions from a place of curiosity and openness, and we believe a transparent collaboration is the key to achieve it.
The results of our investigation will be published here in this Noozhawk Asks section. Once or twice a month, we plan to do a review of what was asked and answered.
Thanks for asking!
