CHELSEA, MI – A Manchester man has apologized for appreciating a piece of artwork on a Chelsea business wall so much he wrongfully decided to take it home with him on the way out, police said.
Officers were called to the Chelsea Police Department at 1:05 p.m., Feb. 5, to take a report of stolen property that occurred at a business in the 1100 block of S. Main Street the day prior, according to the Chelsea Police Department.
The complainant told officers he was baffled when he arrived to work and noticed a piece of framed artwork was missing from the wall of the business, police said.
The man, wondering what had happed to the art, checked security footage from the day prior and witnessed a customer taking the art off the wall and walking away with it at about 6:20 p.m., police said.
Checking credit card sales receipts from that night, police were able to identify the suspect seen leaving with the art as a 41-year-old Manchester man and contacted him about the theft, police said.
The man spoke with officers and said he “felt bad” and apologized for taking the art before agreeing to bring it to the Chelsea Police Department to be returned to its rightful owner, police said.
The art was then returned to the owner who declined to press criminal charges for the theft.
