We’re getting not one, but two new Pinocchio adaptations later this year. Along with Disney’s upcoming live action reboot of the classic Italian novel, Guillermo del Toro is bringing his very own stop-motion animation take on the tale. After years — over a decade! — waiting for more news on Del Toro’s film, Netflix has finally released the first look and dropped the release date for the movie.
Del Toro’s upcoming movie is set to retell Carlo Collodi’s classic tale, following a “wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto,” per Netflix’s description. This whimsical, stop-motion musical directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”
Along with Del Toro and Gustafson at the helm of directors, the film was also written in collaboration between Del Toro and Patrick McHale. The all-star voice cast includes Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and introduces Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, with Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.
In the teaser, we’re introduced to McGregor as the new and improved Jiminy Cricket. The wooden creature explains how the story will unfurl: “I want to tell you a story. It’s a story you may think you know, but you don’t. Not really,” he says. “You see, I, Sebastian J. Cricket, was there. As a matter of fact, I lived — actually lived — in the heart of the wooden boy.”
The upcoming animated film has been stuck in development since 2008, when the project was first announced by Del Toro. Produced by The Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine, Pinocchio was originally slated for a 2013 or 2014 release, but production halted and did not pick back up again until 2017. After years of no movement, Netflix finally picked up the project in 2018.
