A manufacturer of electric pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles plans to establish its second U.S. assembly plant in suburban Atlanta, state and company officials announced.
Rivian said the new factory, located on a 2,000-acre plot known as the East Atlanta Megasite, will eventually be able to produce up to 400,000 vehicles per year. Construction will begin next summer ahead of the anticipated start of production in 2024.
The $5 billion project is expected to create 7,500 new jobs. Georgia officials said it is the single-largest economic development announcement in state history.
“We’re happy to partner with Georgia on our next manufacturing site, which will allow us to meet demand for Rivian products and to scale our business rapidly,” Helen Russell, Rivian’s chief people officer, said in a statement. “Our work together is rooted in collaboration, transparency, fairness, and a strong sense of belonging. We’re excited for Georgians to bring their creativity and ideas to Rivian.”
State officials said that the Georgia Quick Start program — a division of the state’s technical college system — would build and operate a center to support the automaker’s workforce training needs, while the state Labor Department would assist with identifying and recruiting workers. Additional incentives, including potential tax benefits, were not disclosed.
Rivian, based in Southern California, went public in early November and is now one of the world’s most valuable car companies.
