Garden Grove Unified opens new Wellness Centers – OCDE Newsroom

Garden Grove Unified is offering students greater accessibility to mental health services by opening new Wellness Centers at various campuses across the district.
As part of the district’s “Choose Wellness” campaign, the centers provide students a quiet place to process emotions and offer services such as one-on-one counseling, support groups and crisis intervention.
The addition of Wellness Centers are a small portion of the work Garden Grove USD is doing to support social and emotional well-being, including expanding mental health staff and counseling programs, supporting resiliency through trauma-informed teaching practices, and hosting monthly wellness webinars, according to district officials.
“The new Wellness Centers provide another layer of support for our students,” said Garden Grove Unified Superintendent Dr. Gabriela Mafi. “We want students to know that we all deal with anxiety, fear and worry, and that it’s important that we all learn how to cope with these emotions when we do feel overwhelmed.”
Similar wellness centers have been created at schools throughout the county to provide an infrastructure of social-emotional support for students. As you may recall, OCDE earlier this year partnered with CHOC to open WellSpace centers at five schools in Orange County.
For additional information about Garden Grove USD’s Wellness Centers, watch this video below produced by the district’s Communications team.

Fatal drug overdoses have surged in recent years, Fatal drug overdoses have surged in recent years, driven by the explosion of a synthetic opioid known as fentanyl. Young people believe they’re misusing medications like oxycodone or pain relievers, or anxiety medications like Xanax, but in fact they’re counterfeit pills tainted by fentanyl. OCDE Newsroom staff recently reached out to Stephen Lambert, coordinator of prevention education in OCDE’s Student Achievement and Wellness Unit, to help Orange County families better understand the dangers of fentanyl, as well as potential warning signs and prevention strategies.
