SWARTZ CREEK, MI — No one was injured in a fire that destroyed a Swartz Creek auto repair shop Monday afternoon, according to officials.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, to a fire at Diesel Pro’s & Performance, 5200 Morrish Road.
The building was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and mutual aid was immediately requested, Swartz Creek Area Fire Department Chief Dave Plum said at the scene.
No one was injured in the fire but the building was a complete loss, Plum said. There were around six vehicles and multiple pieces of equipment inside the building at the time of the fire.
The owner of the shop, Matthew Randall, told MLive-The Flint Journal that he believes the fire started as a technician was using a torch under a vehicle.
Randall said he believes a piece of ash fell onto a chemical on the floor, starting a flame.
There were seven people inside the building when the fire started. All of them made it out uninjured, Randall said.
Randall, who has owned the auto repair shop for four years, said the business has full coverage insurance and they plan to rebuild at the spot.
“We’ll have guys with wrenches in hands by next Monday morning,” Randall said.
The fire remains under investigation.
Multiple fire departments could be seen at the scene as firefighters continued to work to extinguish hot spots inside the building shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.
Agencies that responded to the scene include the Swartz Creek Fire Department, Flushing Fire Department, Flushing Township Fire Department, Burton Fire Department, Clayton Township Police Department, Flint Township Fire Department, Gaines Township Fire Department, Venice Township Fire Department, and Metro Police Authority of Genesee County.
