Kegler's Korner: Pepperman rolls an 822 series | News, Sports, Jobs – Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Jan 4, 2022
Mike Pepperman had a great week between the holidays. He bowled an 822 series in the Intercommunity League after rolling a 794 the night before in the Monday Night Classic League, where he shot a 300 game. Amanda Heck swept the ladies’ weekly honors with a 677 series, including a 278 game in the Intercommunity League, the sixth time this season she posted the best female series.
While David Briggs threw a perfect game in the Thursday Night Mixed League, Taylor Smith came up one pin short for a 299 in that same league, as did Brandon Koser in the Monday Night Classic.
Following are available high scores from local leagues last week:
HARVEST MOON: Intercommunity: DeWayne Harris 288; Thursday Night Mixed: Karla Anderson 668/254; Andy Tressler Memorial: Pat Eckman 680, Katy Gee 258.
ABC: Sunday Nite Social: Tiffany Tibbens 522/246, Ron Tibbens 668/257.
FAXON: Susquehanna Health: 12/22: Stacy Gridley 601/225, Dewey Harris 749/279; Thursday Morning Mixed: 12/23: Barb Steppe 543/207, Noah Whitesell 671, Andy Follmer 267; Mighty 8: 12/23: Karen VanKuren 556, Brian Eiswerth 763/258, Nancy Renninger 209; Diane Fox Memorial: 12/23: Jeremy Strouse 702, Doug Mayer 247.
This week we remember 1967 local Hall of Fame inductee Tommy Barger Sr. In view of his ability on the lanes, early in his career, and his contributions to the game of bowling off the lanes, Barger was known as “Mr. Bowling” in the Williamsport area.
In 1923, at the age of 23, he was appointed ally master of the newly installed Williamsport YMCA Lanes, a position he held for over 40 years. During that time, he started the first ladies league in the city, founded blind bowling, junior bowling and programs for handicapped bowlers as well as introducing bowling to the School of Hope. He also helped form the Business Men’s Bowling League, which brought the area’s Catholic and Jewish religious leaders together.
Barger was elected President of the Pa. State Bowling Association in 1962, and enshrined in that Association’s Hall of Fame in 1982, the first local bowler to be accorded that honor. In 1967, he was elected Grand King Pin (national president) of the 700 Clubs of America.
In 1925, Barger was a member of the first area team to participate in the ABC National Tournament. In 1927, he rolled a 706 in the doubles event in that tournament, securing a seventh-place finish, the highest finish by any local bowlers in the National Tournament, a record which stood until 1962. On Jan. 15, 1927, Barger rolled the first 700 series (702) in local area history. He finished several seasons in the 1920s and 1930s with the highest seasonal average in Williamsport, including 1932 when he set a new local record for high seasonal average with a 198
Hope to see you on the lanes.
