Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation Releases Update on Flames Arena Project – The Hockey News

The weather might be frigid in Calgary at the moment, but the drama surrounding their search for a new arena remains red-hot.
Following a slew of reports that surfaced last week suggesting that the deal between the City of Calgary and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation to develop a new downtown event center that would include a brand new arena for the Calgary Flames had fallen through, CSEC has offered an update on the matter that will do little to quell concerns.
In a statement released on Tuesday morning, CSEC revealed that, in order for the project to have moved forward, both parties would have needed to waive construction conditions by a deadline of Dec.31.
According to the statement, neither party did so. And, as a result, the Project Framework Agreement and all associated agreements with the project have been terminated.
Essentially, the project is dead. And the Flames now find themselves back at square one in their quest to obtain an upgrade on the Scotiabank Saddledome – one that is desperately needed.
With the Saddledome currently standing as one of the oldest rinks in the NHL, there is a ticking clock on the Flames' search for a new home base before the venue becomes a serious issue – if it hasn't already.
In the years since this search began, multiple other NHL teams have secured new arenas for themselves, with the Seattle Kraken developing Climate Pledge Arena, the New York Islanders moving out of Nassau Coliseum and into the cutting-edge UBS Arena, and even the Flames' Alberta neighbors over in Edmonton christening Rogers Place as their new digs, as well.
Calgary is a thriving Canadian market with a passionate fanbase. That fanbase deserves a new building.
