Authorities have closed DW’s office in Moscow and banned DW broadcasts in Russia as of today. This is being seen as retaliation for the decision of the German media regulator to ban the German-language programming of Russian state broadcaster RT.
Politicians and organizations in Germany have defended Deutsche Welle after Russian authorities moved to close its Moscow bureau.
Russia has revoked Deutsche Welle’s broadcast license and shut down DW’s office in Moscow, after German regulators banned Russian broadcaster RT Deutsch. But the two broadcasters are not the same.
Russia has withdrawn the press credentials of all Deutsche Welle staff and is shutting the organization’s studio in Moscow. Calling the move a “total overreaction,” DW said it would take legal steps against the decision.
In an unprecedented act of retaliation, Moscow has banned DW from broadcasting in Russia. It’s a response to Germany blocking Russian state broadcaster RT — but there were warning signs long before that.
