New York Giants Will Reportedly Start Jake Fromm At Quarterback – Forbes

The New York Giants, looking to find a spark in another lost season, reportedly plan to start Jake Fromm at quarterback against the Eagles this weekend.
Giants head coach Joe Judge has not announced Fromm as the starter. He did concede that the 23- year-old Fromm, who came into last week’s game in relief of struggling quarterback Mike Glennon and who gave the offense a tiny bit of a spark during one garbage time series, had done “enough to be in consideration” for the job the rest of the season.
Fromm finished six of 12 for 82 yards and moved the Giants offense from their own 7-yard line to the Dallas 9-yard line.
Fromm’s performance in which he was cool, calm, and collected in the pocket impressed at least one of his veteran teammates.
“He really just came in and made the most of an opportunity,” said Kenny Golladay, who caught a 36-yard pass thrown by Fromm.
“Things weren’t going well, so I think he kind of just went in there fearless really and kind of, ‘let me sling it around a little bit.’ He did a hell of a job.”
Golladay also praised Fromm for his huddle presence.
“He definitely controlled the huddle well. I wasn’t surprised, I took reps with him in practice before. It was good to see what he showed on the practice field translated to the game.”
Despite the positives, Judge noted, “There’s a big difference between starting an entire NFL game and coming in at the end of the game when the team is playing more of a two-minute prevent mode. That’s not a knock on Jake; it’s just the reality and the truth.”
To get a better look at Fromm, the Giants coaching staff had him take practice snaps against the scout team defense, which created various scenarios, including exotic blitzes, stunts, coverage disguises, and other elements that often pop up during the game.
If Fromm, whom the Giants signed on December 1, does get the start, it will be the first time in 29 years that the Giants have started three quarterbacks in the season.
In 1992, the Giants began the season with long-time veteran Phil Simms. Simms suffered a season-ending elbow injury in Week 4 and was replaced by backup Jeff Hostetler, who seven games into his run as the starting quarterback that season suffered a concussion.
The following week, in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, rookie Kent Graham was given the starting assignment ahead of Dave Brown, the Giants’ first-round pick in the 1992 supplemental draft. In that game, a 30-3 Giants loss, Graham went 12-of-28 for 151 yards.
Fromm, who began this season as something of an afterthought as he languished in the Buffalo Bills practice squad, was a 2020 fifth-round pick out of the University of Georgia, where, in three seasons, he completed 621 out of 982 pass attempts for 8,224 yards and 78 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions.
If he does indeed get the opportunity to start, Fromm, who’s been trying to keep a level head and focus on his preparation, said he hopes to do what he’s always done for the teams he’s played for.
“Just good decisions—let’s get the ball out, let’s get everybody on the same page and really just trying to move the sticks, move the sticks, move the sticks,” he said. “If we move the sticks enough, we’ll get close enough and we’ll score a few points.”
And hopefully, at least as far as the Giants are concerned, snap a three-game losing streak and a seven-game losing streak against the Eagles on the road, in the process.
