Thanking All The Actresses Who Moved Past Airbrushing Their Underarms In 2021 – iDiva.com

Isn’t it wild that we live in a world where people are so stressed about looking “perfect” that they compare themselves to the airbrushed versions of celebrities’ photos? That’s why, the fact that this year some celebrities took small steps to change that means a lot.

This is, in particular, true for the actresses who chose to skip a common practice many celebrities do without thought—airbrushing their underarms. Often done by photographers while processing the pictures, the habit of putting a filter to remove wrinkles or the tiniest semblance of a post-shave stubble obliterates any sign of lines, muscles, and even bones from the armpits of celebrities in their photos.
It makes one wonder how anyone could possibly have underarms like those. Not only that, but it adds yet another veil of secrecy on “how to look like a celebrity,” making beauty all the more unattainable.
Thankfully, though, some celebrities are changing that by keeping it real. Here’s why we’d like to thank them for that, and why such a small thing matters so much.

Many criticise female celebrities for having a pimple, body or facial hair, pores, dark underarms, or even a bit of a belly. That’s why so many celebrities don’t feel confident uploading unedited pictures of themselves. The amount of negativity and trolling they get from people is hard to handle.

For them to still take a chance and be confident enough in their skin to share unedited pictures deserves applause. Few people can be bold when the whole world is telling them to conform and take the easy route out.
Why is airbrushing such a big deal? Image credit: Instagram.com/jacquelinef143
Airbrushing sells a false idea of what people really look like. People see photoshopped photos of celebrities and think that is what the epitome of beauty is. The trouble is, this is a lie because even the celebrity actually does not look like what’s showcased. So, a completely falsified narrative of beauty is manufactured, creating this desire in viewers to mimic that beauty they think a celebrity has, not knowing that the thing they’re seeking is actually Photoshop.

Whether it is airbrushing pores, whitening underarms, smoothening wrinkles on armpits, or editing waists to look tiny, the various forms of photo editing result in the creation of unachievable beauty standards. Any person could have pores, a bit of a tummy, or lines and darkening in their underarms. This stuff just makes us human, and seeking “perfection” there based on edited images of those body parts is not fair to anyone.

Today, there are so many products for smoothening, whitening, “brightening” and “de-tanning” underarms. People are actually making money from the fact that we are insecure about the obscurest of body parts, and are profiting from the existence of such unreal beauty standards.

Why feed that? What is the need to bleach our armpits? Who is this helping except the companies which will make money from telling us what is wrong with us?

Celebrities who are widely recognised as beauty icons and are the faces of beauty brands have people looking up to them. People want hair like theirs, the lipsticks they wear, the highlighter that’s giving them a glow.

When the same celebrities say “No, I will not airbrush my pores,” or “I will keep it real by not face-tuning my photos,” people understand that even beauty icons do not look like their photoshopped photos, so why should anyone butcher their self-esteem.
That’s why not airbrushing one’s underarms—a seemingly trivial matter—is a huge deal. It undoes the systemic pressure to be perfect, and reminds us that the best of them don’t look like their airbrushed magazine and advertisement photos. It also reduces the pressure on celebs to look “flawless” all the time and gives their fans achievable beauty inspiration, not aspirations which aren’t humanly possible to attain.
