Students can carry books for first sem exams from Jan 18: SBTET – Telangana Today

Hyderabad: Starting January next year, students of diploma courses can appear for examinations along with their books. Yes, you read it right. They can take their books into the exam hall.
The State Board of Technical Education and Training (SBTET) has decided to introduce an open book system of examination for first semester exams which are scheduled to begin from January 18. Students will be allowed to carry any of the two reference books out of five prescribed by the Board into the examination hall.
The Board has decided to implement this new system of examination for common subjects in diploma courses. To start with, it will be implemented in English papers in the first and second semesters. Similarly, Mathematics papers in third and fourth semesters and Industrial Management and Entrepreneurship paper in the fifth semester will have an open book exam system.
While the examination pattern will remain the same, there will be changes in the nature of questions. Instead of direct questions, students will be tested with indirect questions which will make them think before attempting.
“Unless a student covers all lessons in the particular subject, he or she will not be able to attempt the open book exam,” a senior official said. According to the official, one of the main reasons to introduce the new system of examination was to do away with rote-learning methods. “Now students are just mugging up the subject and reproducing the same in the exams. This will not be the case in an open book exam,” he said.
The Board had already implemented this new system of examination in the mid exams and received positive response from students.
“Students wishing to appear without books will also be allowed,” the official said, adding that a total of 20,000 students were expected to take diploma first semester examinations. The Board is also planning to launch online proctored exams for some of its certificate courses like information technology, yoga, and fashion technology etc.
