UAB physician provides medical coverage to U.S. Ski Team while in Croatia – UAB News

Aaron Casp, M.D., UAB orthopaedic surgeon at the World Cup games in Croatia. physician Aaron Casp, M.D., recently provided medical coverage for the United States Ski Team during the World Cup slalom race in Zagreb, Croatia. Casp is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Heersink School of Medicine.
One of the notable athletes on the U.S. Ski Team is two-time Olympian and six-time world champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who earned a podium finish at the slalom race, and recently garnered her 47th World Cup victory — the most in history. The next stop for the ski team is the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
“I enjoyed treating these elite athletes with elite medical coverage,” Casp said. “It is an honor to stay in the medical pool for treating athletes of this caliber with the opportunity to represent UAB across the globe.”
This will not be the first time Casp has worked with U.S. Ski Team athletes. Casp’s story in supporting Olympic athletes began when he completed his sports medicine fellowship at the world-renowned Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado.
Casp then traveled to Austria to provide medical coverage to the U.S. Ski Team athletes and was responsible for the care of athletes from all over the world at the FIS Snowboard and Freeski World Championships in Aspen, Colorado.
This month in Croatia, Casp — who has advanced training in the treatment of knee, shoulder and hip injuries — evaluated injuries, provided on-snow care, and was generally responsible for the health and well-being of the whole team.
