Fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked a two-alarm blaze that caused a estimated $1 million in damage to a two-story building in North Park early Sunday.
The fire was discovered about 9 a.m. on the second floor of a building on University Avenue near 30th Street. It appeared it started in a wellness studio and extended into an attic the business shares with a barber shop, San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief David Gerboth told OnScene TV.
Firefighters at nearby Station 14 were checking their equipment at the start of their shift when they noticed smoke in the area. They responded as the fire was dispatched, Gerboth said.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke.
“Firefighters made an extremely aggressive attack, attacking the fire and ventilating the roof,” Gerboth said.
Firefighters called for a second-alarm, summoning additional firefighters and resources.
“We did have a significant number of personnel working to contain the fire, ensuring it didn’t spread beyond those businesses,” Gerboth said.
The fire was contained to wellness studio and barber shop, he said. The fire was knocked down in about a half hour.
Several nearby apartment complexes were evacuated but were not damaged, Gerboth said.
There were no injuries reported. Nobody was inside either business at the time of the fire, he added.
Staff writer David Hernandez contributed to this report.
