Currently, 99% of the U.S. hydrogen production is derived from fossil fuels, while the remainder is produced using electrolysis.
Officials say 95% of fossil fuel derived hydrogen is produced using steam methane reforming.
Hydrogen is used within oil refineries, to produce ammonia and for methanol production.
Nationally, the federal government is focusing on creating at least four hydrogen hubs across the U.S. through the Infrastructure Bill, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021 and many other proposed bills.
Hydrogen as a transportation fuel may be the first and most cost-competitive sector of the blossoming industry for Oklahoma to pursue.
